By Paul Greulich, Staff WriterSeveral years of upgrades at Hurrell Field will wrap up in the next few weeks with the installation of a state-of-the-art scoreboard, replacing two separate, older boards at the site.
Borough Administrator Michael Rohal said the improved scoreboard will be very welcome.
“Currently we have a scoreboard for football and separate one for baseball,” Rohal explained. “The new one will consolidate them into one scoreboard.”
According to local officials, the new scoreboard is designed to be used for a variety of different sports, just like the field itself. It will be about the same size as the existing football scoreboard, but with considerable improvements.
Parks and Recreation Director Jim Cowan said new features include a wireless control panel that allows the operators to program the board from virtually any location around the field.
“The current scoreboard there is probably about 15 or 20 years old,” Cowan said. “Technology and electronics in particular have come a long way in that time.”
The new scoreboard will be from a company that has installed similar scoreboards for other
parks and fields in Essex County.
The project cost $18,000, $12,000 of which was donated by the Glen Ridge Athletic Association. The GRAA and the high school are the primary users of the field.
However, Hurrell also sees a lot of recreational jogging and walking in addition to football, baseball, and track activities. It will also be the site of Fitzgerald’s Lager Run, scheduled for the end of June.
“Hurrell Field is the centerpiece of our athletic community, and any big events are likely to be held there,” Cowan said.
District Superintendent John Mucciolo said local students use the field only on a limited basis.
“We use it for football, but we’ve been using Washington for most soccer and lacrosse games,” Mucciolo said.
The new board will be placed where the current football scoreboard is positioned.
