Local organizations and sponsors are preparing to strike a mighty blow against breast cancer as preparation begins for the Girl’s Night Out fundraising event in March.
This annual bash gives men and women the chance to enjoy music, dancing, massage chairs, a tarot card readings, pink drinks and wine.
“This year we have some new and exciting surprises for our guests but they have to come and party with a purpose to find out just what they’ll be,” said Karen Winslow, the event’s chairwoman.
Proceeds this year will benefit the Connie Dwyer Breast Center, located at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark.
“We provide quality breast care from screening to diagnosis to treatment for all women regardless of their ability to pay,” explained Janet Lesko, director of development at the center. “There are a lot of women who are uninsured or under-insured and we take care of all of them.”
The event is sponsored by Caldwell Banker’s Montclair Office, which is donating $5,000 to the event. Marie-Jean Shirinian, the bank’s vice president and manager, said she feels it is very important to draw recognition to this cause.
“I think it’s an amazing cause that we had no choice but to sponsor,” Shirinian said.
Also sponsoring Girls Night Out is Marshall Hendrian Jr., a local resident who pledged $1,000 for the event. Hendrian, who works as a managing partner at the J.W. Allen, an insurance brokerage company in New York City, said it is important that he, his co-workers and family make donations to such causes.
“We like to donate to charitable causes within the communities where we live,” Hendrian said.
The money raised will go toward the purchase of a new mammography machine, which will replace an older model from 2000. The new machine will cost $500,000.
