Michael D’Onofrio, Staff WriterThe newly built Smash Burger in Glenmont Square was the focus of residential complaints at the first monthly meeting of the mayor and council on March 8. With a written statement in hand, a married couple and lifelong residents of Glen Ridge came once again to voice their complaints concerning the new restaurant.
The residents told the mayor and council that they have been dealing with late-night delivery trucks which keep their motors running, and the consequential exhaust and noise that they produce; head-lights glaring into their home due to the inadequate fence and shrubbery; and a potent smell from the kitchen which can be smelled by the entire neighborhood at certain times during the day.
The two residents also had kept extensive notes concerning the days and times of these nuisances and how long they continued for, all of which they presented to the council. They said they have always called the Glen Ridge Police Department as well as the Montclair Police Department to submit a complaint at the time of the nuisance.
Concerning the potent smell, they have continually contacted the Health Department in an attempt to bring violations against Smash Burger for what they consider to be its inadequate filtration system. However, the residents said the smell happens during hours that the Health Department is not available, such as late at night or on weekends.
