Junior forward Solomon Givens scored 14 points and junior guard Devin Garrity and senior forward Dan DiGioia each had seven points to lead the Glen Ridge High School boys’ varsity basketball team to a 39-37 home win over Cedar Grove this past Tuesday. Sophomore guard Jackson Kinley had six points and freshman guard Zach Thomas added five points for the Ridgers, who snapped a nine-game losing streak and improved to 3-12.
Givens scored 12 points and DiGioia and Kinley each had six points but the 29th-seeded Ridgers lost to No. 16 seed East Orange Campus, 79-29, in the first round preliminary of the Essex County Tournament last Saturday in East Orange.
Givens had a game-high 16 points and Garrity had 12 points but the Ridgers lost to Montclair Immaculate Conception, 48-44, in Montclair on Jan. 26. Sophomore guard Brandon Hayes had eight points and Thomas had six points.
Senior forward Jamie Smith scored 13 points and Givens had six points for the Ridgers in a 40-27 loss to Golda Och on Jan. 24 in West Orange.
GRHS swimmers make splash at ECC
Glen Ridge High School swimmers Katherine Culligan and Kristin Culligan gave excellent showings at the Essex County Championships this past Sunday Jan. 29 at Seton Hall University in South Orange.
Katherine Culligan finished third in the 200-yard individual medley relay in 2:14.45 and took third in the 100-yard breast stroke in 1:09.65. Kristin Culligan was tied for fifth in the 100-yard butterfly in 1:01.59.
Hockey players key victory over Millburn
Glen Ridge’s Matt Lander, Max Linnett, Sam Dobbs and Michael Lloyd sparked the Verona/Glen Ridge high school varsity ice hockey team to a 12-5 win over Millburn this past Monday Jan. 30 at Codey Arena in West Orange.
Lander had four goals and one assist; Linnett posted two goals and one assist and Lloyd and Dobbs each had one goal. Verona/Glen Ridge improved to 10-7-2.
GRHS girls’ hoops fall to West Orange
The Glen Ridge High School girls’ varsity basketball team hopes to get back on the winning track.
The Ridgers have lost five straight to fall to 3-10.
GRHS dropped a 50-29 home decision to West Orange on Jan. 24.
Two days later, the Ridgers lost at Millburn, 47-24. Mary Alati had 10 points, Emily Marhan had seven points and Danielle Lisovicz added five points for GRHS.
Lisovicz had eight points and Marhan had four points in the 58-26 loss at Irvington this past Tuesday.
