Many residents are already familiar with the financial trouble that New Jersey finds itself in. As this fiscal year comes to a close, there has been much debate between Gov. Chris Christie, the Office of Legislative Services and other independent researchers, concerning exactly how much New Jersey’s revenue will fall in fiscal year 2010. The revenue gap is estimated to be in excess of $2 billion, according to the New Jersey Legislature Web sit. Nonetheless, whatever the number ends up being, it is almost certain to dramatically affect the budget for this coming fiscal year.
These exigent circumstances have caused Christie to take bold measures. On Feb. 11, he convened a joint session of the Legislature at the statehouse to declare a financial state of emergency. In an effort to prepare for the 2010 financial shortfalls, he proposed, among many other things, to freeze $475 million in state aid for schools for the remainder of the year.
