Mary J. Kokes
Mary J. Kokes of Glen Ridge died Jan. 16 at Mountainside Hospital,
Glen Ridge. Born in Newark, Ms. Kokes lived most of her life in
Glen Ridge. She was a legal secretary for Newark attorney Andrew F.
Zazzali Jr. for 24 years before retiring in 2001. She was a
Eucharistic minister and served as secretary of the Rosary Society,
both of Holy Name Church. She had been employed in the parish
center for the past five years as an office assistant. Ms. Kokes is
survived by her sister, Jane Hughes, many nephews and nieces; and
friend, Mary Sheehan.
Walter C. Kaufman
Walter C. Kaufman, 81, of Glen Ridge died Dec. 28. Born in Munich,
Germany, Mr. Kaufman came to the United States in 1938 and lived in
Rochester, N.Y., before moving to Glen Ridge 19 years ago. He was a
graduate of the University of Rochester and held a Ph.D in
sociology from Northwestern University. He was a teacher for more
than 40 years, and a professor of sociology at Bloomfield College
before his retirement. Mr. Kaufman is survived by his wife,
Marylou, nee Schmitz.
David J. O’Boyle
David J. O’Boyle, 85, died Dec. 30 at Mountainside Hospital, Glen
Ridge. Born in Philadelphia, Mr. O’Boyle lived in Glen Ridge for 38
years before moving to West Orange eight years ago. He was an
attorney and board member of Uniroyal Holding Inc., Oxford, Conn.,
retiring 10 years ago. Before joining Uniroyal, he was a partner in
the law firm of Arthur, Dry and Kalish, N.YC., N.Y. He graduated
from University of Pennsylvania and Harvard Law School, and was a
World War II Army veteran. He was a member of the Glen Ridge
Volunteer Ambulance Squad, the Sierra Club of West Essex, the
Mercier Club of Montclair and the New York Bar Association. Mr.
O’Boyle is survived by his wife, Teresa, nee Gibbons; children,
Mary O’Neill, Julia Donovan, Ellen McCahill, Elizabeth Goodwin, and
John O’Boyle; and 10 grandchildren.
Carol M. Berry
Carol M. Berry, nee Deller, 86, of Denville, formerly of Glen
Ridge, died Jan. 15 at Morristown Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Berry
graduated from Trenton State Teachers College in 1945 and worked as
an elementary school teacher in Morristown, Glen Ridge and Dover
for many years before retiring in 1986. Mrs. Berry was predeceased
by her husband, Stephen C. She is survived by her sons, Stephen
Jr., David, and Mark; 11 grandchildren and one
great-grandchild.
